TORONTO - The Canadian Catholic television network opened a bureau based in Vatican City on March 19. It is a joint effort of Catholic News Service, the Knights of Columbus, H2O News and Salt + Light.

“Topics of interest to the church and to the world’s faithful pose problems for journalists who are often on deadline, face limits on space and worry about tackling topics deemed taboo,” said Fr. Thomas Rosica, CEO of Salt + Light. “We hope our efforts in Rome will help people read beyond the headlines.”

Alicia Ambrosio of Vancouver will be leading the coverage for the network and has already begun filing stories. Ambrosio, 28, has been a producer with Salt + Light since 2008. She holds a master’s degree in social communications from Rome’s Pontifical Salesian University and a BA in communications from Simon Fraser University in B.C. She previously interned with Catholic News Service and Catholic newspapers in Canada.

Ambrosio filed her first story from Rome on March 10 and got to see first-hand the fall-out from the recent sex abuse scandal in Ireland. On reporting about the Pope’s letter, Ambrosio said it was an interesting task to “find out what the average Irish Catholic got out of that letter,” she said in an e-mail to The Catholic Register.

Ambrosio said being at the Vatican presents a wealth of experts and a diversity of Catholic communities, parishes and rites which can be brought home to a Canadian audience.
